Meet The Flower Project

We've had the pleasure of working with Kathryn from The Flower Project on our annual Christmas Wreath Workshops for four years running and each time it just gets better and better! Her knowledge and passion for floristry is infectious and she always brings the best stuff to play with on wreath-making night.

We wanted to show you a bit more about what goes into Kathryn's day and some of the magic behind her work, so we followed her around for a morning, asked her some questions and took some pictures! Meet Kathryn...

tell us a little bit about a typical day at the flower project

The markets start early in Mt. Wellington, before most people even dream about getting out of bed. We buy the flowers at New Zealand's biggest flower auction where I have been buying (in the same seat!) for the past 11 years. Once we have selected and bought the flowers for our clients we pop them in the van and head back to our headquarters to get them all wrapped up and out the door to be delivered. We pride ourselves on an average of 4.5 hours from market to door so our freshness is unparalleled.

what drew you to the world of flowers?

My careers advisor told me I should be a florist in my last year of school in Surrey, England so I did a month’s work experience at a florist shop where they really only let me carry buckets and do all the dirty work. After that, a friend of mine who was a florist started teaching me and I helped her with a few events. It was when I moved back to New Zealand that I realised that corporate life was no longer for me. I wanted to be creative, I wanted to work with nature so I took the plunge into full time floristry and I haven't looked back since.

what’s your favourite thing about what you do?

I love the people who I work with – I have an amazing team and we are really close. I love that the industry we are in is a 'do no evil' industry.... we sell flowers that make people happy and people who love flowers are good people by default. So I work with good people, sell to good people and I am surrounded by beauty every day. I can't complain.

it’s almost summer! what flowers should we be looking out for this season?

It's peony season and that stretches from now until mid-December if we are lucky. Then when the peonies fade away, the hydrangea come in full throttle. Delphinium are starting to make a firm appearance at the market too... all my favs!!

what can we expect at the A&C x the flower project christmas wreath workshops?

You can expect a gorgeous night of food, wine, creativity and lots of enjoyment. We have been doing these workshops for four years running now and we see people come back year after year. It's great to mix and mingle and take home a beautiful wreath for your table centrepiece or your front door.

what are some of your tips for decorating with florals in a festive way?

When I was a kid my Mum used to string conifer all the way up our staircase for Christmas and the house would smell amazing. I think the use of foliage indoors, in addition or in place of a fresh Christmas tree, brings the outdoors in makes everything feel extra special and hits you up with those Christmas warm and fuzzies. You don't need a great deal of flowers to make an impact if you team them up with some gorgeous greens – so raid your garden or your local park for some foliage to create the base for your florals. Florals in the key rooms of your house is what you should be aiming for and if you can make or buy a fresh or dried wreath you are winning.

The A&C x The Flower Project Christmas Wreath Workshops will be held on Wednesday 5 December (at A&C Birkenhead) and Wednesday 6 December (at A&C BLOC Mt Eden). This year, we're splitting the workshops to have one focussed on fresh florals and one focussed on dried florals - something new we're really excited about!

Spaces are limited to thirty people per workshop, so be quick to secure your tickets via the links below.
